Itinerary

Day 1: Aqaba - Wadi Rum - Little Petra - Petra (L)

Your English speaking driver will be waiting dockside to meet and assist you. He will drive you in a modern, air conditioned vehicle to Wadi Rum (approx. 1.5 hours travel time).

Climb into the back of a 4WD jeep and begin a 3 hour tour through this beautiful desert valley. Travel across red colored sands, past soaring sand dunes, towering mountains and through canyons. See ancient rock inscriptions and much more.

At the conclusion of your tour, enjoy a bbq lunch of chicken or lamb accompanied by salads. Complimentary soda and water are included.

Return to your driver/vehicle to continue north on the Kings' Highway stopping at Little Petra. It is here on the once-fertile plains that the caravans assembled/rested (some with up to 1,000 camels) before heading in to Petra or journeying out along the Silk Road to Asia, north to Damascus or south to Egypt. Little Petra provided accommodation and eateries for the cameleers.

Day 2: All Day Petra (B)

Meet your English speaking guide in your hotel lobby before walking 200m to the entrance to Petra. Walk past tombs and shrines before arriving at the mile-long Siq (chasm). Follow the narrow, winding passage past carvings, shrines, water channels, and in parts, over original paving. As you reach the end of the Siq you will get your first glimpse of the breathtaking Treasury. From there, explore the Street of Facades, Roman Theatre, Royal Tombs, colonnaded street, Great Temple, Qasr al-Bint and the museum where your guided tour will conclude. The rest of the day is free for you to continue to explore the city ruins, climb the 800+ steps to the Monastery and/or the High Place of Sacrifice. Make your own way back through the Siq to the entrance gates.

Day 3: Petra - Shobak Castle - Madaba - Mt Nebo - Dead Sea (B)

Heading north along the Kings' Highway, you will shortly reach Shobak and the crusader castle built by Baldwin I of Jerusalem in 1115. Strategically located on a hill along the pilgrimage and caravan routes from Syria to Arabia, Baldwin controlled the commerce of the area. It was also where Richard the Lion Heart fought Saladin during the Crusader Wars.

After passing through the magnificent Wadi Mujib canyon stop at the lookout near Dhiban for photos then drive to Madaba.

At the 6th Century St George Church, view the famous mosaic map showing details of the Holy Land. Then it's on to Mt Nebo where God permitted Moses to have a brief glimpse of the Promised Land before he died. From the lookout close to the Brazen Serpent Cross you can see the Dead Sea, Jordan Valley, Jericho and the Jerusalem Mountains. Descend the mountains to the Dead Sea and check in to your hotel.

At 420m below sea level, it is the lowest point on earth. Enjoy the bizarre but delightful experience of floating on the surface. The hotel offers many relaxing and rejuvenating treatments in their spa (additional cost).

Day 4: Dead Sea - Jerash - Amman (B)

After breakfast head north to Jerash, the best preserved Roman provincial town in the world. Meet your English speaking guide at the entrance and enter the ancient city via Hadrian's Arch for a 2 hour tour. Visit the hippodrome, the Temples of Zeus and Artemis, Roman Theatres, a Byzantine Church, public baths, and walk along colonnaded streets.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (drinks extra) before heading to the capital - Amman. Visit the Citadel, site of the oldest settlement in Amman and tour through the downtown city. Check-in to your hotel.

Day 5: Petra Tour

With your guide walk the 1.2km long Siq, passing shrines, tombs and carvings before reaching the magnificent Treasury. explor the Street of Facades, Roman Theatre, Royal Tombs, Colonnaded Street, Winged Lion's Temple, and the Petra Museum where your guided tour will conclude. The rest of the day is free-time to continue exploring the city. Climb to the Monastery and/or High Place of Sacrifice.
Overnight Petra

During the Exodus, Moses and the Israelites passed through the Petra area in Edom. Local tradition says that the spring at Wadi Musa (Valley of Moses), just outside Petra, is the place where Moses struck the rock and brought forth water. Aaron, brother of Moses and Miriam, is buried in Petra at Jabal Harun (Mt. Aaron). From a distance you can see the shrine/tomb of Aaron on the summit of the mountain. Pilgrims from all over the world make the 3.5 hour climb.

Day 6: Amman to Airport (B)

This morning you will be transferred to Queen Alia International Airport for your departure flight.
